IN HER OWN WORDS
'My Process'
The individual elements in my work are mementos that have been used up and discarded by our ever-growing consumerist society. I am drawn to the haunting nature of these objects long since abandoned: a hook someone once stored their keys upon, an old, discarded phone that once carried countless bits of good and bad news, jewelry someone wore hoping to impress a lover…. It is tremendously meaningful to me that the items I use in my mixed media constructions are reclaimed and revived after having been long left behind. Dismantling and repurposing in my studio gives new life to these curios once forgotten... creating imagery that is meaningful to us a collective whole.
'My Inspiration'
During my childhood, I spent considerable time at my grandmother's house, exploring her jewelry boxes and drawers in search of hidden treasures. These moments were among the most joyful and serene of my early years, providing a peaceful, meditative escape. Following my mother’s passing in 2013, I inherited a vast array of items from her artist’s studio, which was filled with an abundance of trims, charms, beads, buttons, and trinkets. My mother was a remarkably talented artist who, unfortunately, did not have the chance to fully realize her artistic aspirations.
In my mixed media work, I incorporate vintage, recycled, and repurposed beads, hardware, jewelry, and chains, many of which belong to my late mother’s collection. Keeping her spirit with me throughout this creative journey is an integral part of my daily practice, allowing me to revisit the joy and tranquility I experienced in her studio.
